Latest News on the Olympic Torch in Tibet

From MountEverest.net:
South side (Nepal-based) Everest teams are retreating to Base Camp or even lower down the Khumbu valley, as the entire route is expected to be closed from Thursday. However, last-minute reports suggest the north side (Tibet-based) torch relay expedition may have delayed their summit bid due to high winds.

After Chomolongma (Mt. Everest), the Olympic torch will be trotted, disasterously, through a host of other Tibetan cities and lands Lhasa (June 20-21), Lhokha (June 19), Gormo, Kokonor, and Gyalthang. More on the Olympic Torch Run in Tibet.

Tibetans and Chinese Meet for Spirited Dialogue in Millbrae

About 15 members of our community met on Sunday, May 3, with a group of Chinese and Taiwanese, to discuss issues relating to China and Tibet.

Excerpt of the story:  “After the forum ended, all around the room, clusters of people exchanged views and follow up questions, some in Chinese, some in English. While the panel discussions had run quite heated at times, with some people shouting or jabbing the air vehemently to make points, the “show” aspect settled into more intense listening and exchanging of ideas in the post-forum conversations. From a Tibetan perspective, it was gratifying to see a Tibetan man speaking to ex-Regent Lee, telling him that he grew up in Tibet and never once considered himself to be Chinese – and that he himself would not protest Chinese actions if the Chinese government treated Tibetans the same way that they treat Chinese people. And to ask Mr. Lee what he meant when he said he thought China did not invade Tibet in the 1950’s, and that Tiannanmen Square was more complicated than it appeared.”
