Community Center

The Tibetan community of Northern California has long dreamt of having a community center.  Community leaders recognized early on the need for such a facility both as a way to keep the fledgling community together, and to deliver some basic programs and services.  Community leaders and TANC convened several meetings over the years to explore how best to work towards this goal.  In 2006, the community realized it had the critical mass and a team that could launch a campaign to raise the funds needed to build a community center.

The campaign aims to raise $1.5 million to purchase a property in the East Bay preferably in and around Berkeley and northern Oakland.  The project desires a property with space for a community hall for at least 200 people, a large kitchen, classrooms, offices, and a library.  In addition, there would be a small stupa where members can gather and perform their daily spiritual practices.

The capital campaign was launched with a major fundraising event at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco on April 8, 2006. The campaign did not have any paid staff and consultant until the beginning of May 2008.  Over $600,000 has been raised so far in contributions and pledges. In addition, the campaign has helped to attract significant funding for other TANC programs.

The campaign team consists of two paid positions: a Community Coordinator and a Campaign Executive Director, and an all-volunteer team of nine other individuals. All of them collectively make up the Capital Campaign Committee.  This body is also known as the Executive Committee. The team works under the close direction of TANC Board of Directors who in turn are directly elected by members of TANC.  In addition, there is also a campaign Advisory Council made up of community leaders and friends of the community and a Program Committee to help with program design, monitoring and evaluation.
