Inside Tibet: Landscape

Yarlung Tsangbo River
Yarlung Tsangpo River near Lhasa

Our first impression on the ground in Tibet was of the immensity of the two rivers, the Yarlung Tsanpo and Kyichu, running beside the 96 km road from Gonggar Airport to Lhasa. The rivers are broad and look sometimes like deltas, full of wooded islands and sandbars. In this photo, taken at the end of July during a heavy monsoon, the Yarlung Tsangpo levels are problematically high, sometimes flooding the road. Farther along, this river winds into India as the Brahmaputra.
