| Charnel Grounds at Drigung Monastery
Drigung's famous sky-burial site, at 14,300 feet (4360 m). On the day we were there, three corpses were brought to the circle of stones near the center of the photograph, and disposed of in the traditional practice of cutting the flesh from the bones and then feeding it to the waiting huge Himalayan griffin vultures. The experience was the most profound lesson in impermanence imaginable. |
