On the road to Drigung Monastery we stopped when we saw the tents and people, hoping for some summer festival fun, but it was a pitiful band of villagers just barely holding together a performance of a lhamo (tibetan opera) under that huge communist flag. No one knew the songs or dances and they bumbled tragi-comic-heroically along, like a band of Shakespearean rustics.
