| Monks Begging on the Barkhor
There were monks and nuns and people in general begging all over Lhasa. In the Jokhang one day, an ancient lady stopped before me and held out her hands. Tired of beggars that day, I began to move past her when she ask in Tibetan where I was from. When I said America, she said she was from Tibet. "China," she said and here she made a derisive hand gesture, then "Dalai Lama," clasping her hands together reverently. We nodded our heads at each other, grasping hands. Yes, I understood completely. |
