Before the occupation of Tibet the old Tibetan village of Shol gathered at the foot of the Potala Palace. Since it was torn down and replaced by Chinese-style monumental architecture, those who wish to prostrate in front of the Potala have to do so on the curb of the main road. Turning their backs on the Chinese monument to the People's "liberation" of something or other, the Tibetans continue to honor His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
