| Woman with Pet Sheep
This wasn't the only pet sheep we saw in Lhasa. My actual favorite was a white sheep with a pink woolen muzzle, like some bizarre Lhasa version of a foofy Fifi poodle. In general domestic animals are not treated as much as pets as in the West. Larger dogs especially had a rough life, usually chained up outside the entrance to the house, barking viciously whenever anyone unknown approached. Dog bites are fairly common in Tibet, especially near the monasteries where dogs hang out loose in the alleyways. Some cats and small dogs live comfortably inside houses as pets, but generally speaking people treat the pets and other animals much more matter of factly than in the West. |
