Bay Area Unsung Heroes of Compassion

His Holiness the Dalai Lama was the guest of honor at a function organized by Wisdom in Action of Fairfax to honor 50 individuals from across the globe as unsung Heroes of Compassion. It was an event to recognize the work, commitment and dedication of these individuals for their service to others. The function was held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose on May 16, 2001.

Of the 50 persons honored, five were Tibetans, including Tashi Tsering from Tibet who could not attend because of problems securing a travel document. The Bay Area Tibetan Community has special reason to be proud as two of the five Tibetans were from our own community: Jigme Yugyal and Tashi Norbu. Another familiar person honored that evening was Julia Sheperdson, a good friend of TANC and Tibet. Congratulations to Jigme Yugyal, Tashi Norbu and Julia.

Chaksampa and the children's dance group had the privilege to perform cultural dances during the ceremony. His Holiness was very pleased by the performances and encouraged the children to take interest in Tibetan culture and to learn more songs and dances.
